The “Woke Buster’s” are Making Headlines
SALON – Call the “woke busters”: Ron DeSantis sends volunteer army to snatch books from students’ hands
The Manatee Patriots, a right-wing group in Florida’s Manatee County, recently put out a recruitment call for “woke busters” to be the “eyes and ears and boots on the ground in the schools” to stop educators from “filling the libraries with these books.” It did not take much digging to discover that the “woke busters” have extremely broad ideas about what constitutes “inappropriate” reading material. Their parent group, Manatee Patriots, recently celebrated what they claim was a successful effort to force a public library to take down a display celebrating LGBTQ history. They objected to the library’s alliance with a local youth group that serves LGBTQ teens, claiming it’s “the first stage of Grooming” and “Porn” for the group to offer information to kids about safer sex.
The Manatee Patriots’ website has pages dedicated to stirring up outrage over what they deem “filth” students are reading. Why should the Manatee Patriots care if their “activism” deprives kids of the basic educational resources they need to grow into healthy, productive adults? All that authoritarians care about is power and using that power to punish anyone who reminds them that they are a bunch of bigots.
Occupy Democrats – LITERARY VIGILANTES: Florida “woke busters” are targeting students and teachers
“Calling all Woke Busters to Action!” the right-wing group Community Manatee Patriots wrote on its website under the title Woke Busters Wanted. “We ALL have skin in the game.”
“It time! We have to put on our Ghost Buster uniforms and get out our anti woke wand and backpack accelerator to hunt this out, suck it up and send it back into the wokeness universe,” the post read.
“We all must do our part to SAVE the CHILDREN and OUR Society!” The group wrote.
This news comes after the DeSantis administration received backlash from the public for back-to-back authoritarian moves that saw the rejection — and subsequent watering down — of the College Board’s Advanced Placement African-American Studies curriculum for college-bound teens, and allegations of public school teachers being forced to either lock up or remove their classroom libraries under threat of felony prosecution.
According to The Manatee Patriots, the group needs “digital, investigative warriors” with boots on the ground to look up book titles and create a database of books deemed determined to contain inappropriate content.
The plan?
The group encourages members to “Get into the school Libraries,” form relationships with school principals, and look for titles that promote tenets related to activism, racism, “globalism,” and the elephant in the room — white privilege.
It’s not long before talks of indoctrination and pushing back against the Big Bad – whatever that means — begin.
“The Green Blob is hiding in the shadows just waiting for us to turn and look the other way. It is a chameleon, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Did you ever see the movie, They Live? In order to see the EVIL, you needed a particular pair of glasses,” the group wrote.
That sounds sane.
“Some of us do not need the glasses to see and know, but it is up to us to shield others until they have awakened,” Manatee Patriots added.

“Woke-busters”
Right-wing activists hostile to Florida teachers are seizing on the opportunity. The Manatee Patriots is seeking “Woke Busters” to “SAVE the CHILDREN and OUR Society.”
They are urging their members to “get into the school Libraries” and determine whether teachers are “following the laws.” Volunteers are urged to “be on watch for anything that looks inappropriate,” including “activism” and “globalism.”
VICE – Florida Teachers Are Emptying Classroom Libraries to Avoid Going to Jail
“We have a huge Moms For Liberty chapter in this area who would love to find a reason to target teachers who don’t buy into their fascist mentality,” the teacher from Manatee county added. “The only alternative to closing my library is going book by book to make sure each book is listed in our district library catalog. I have hundreds of books in my library. I haven’t had hours and hours to sit and do that this week. So my books remain inaccessible until I have the time to do that and remove any books that aren’t in the catalog.”
The NewYorker – Why Some Florida Schools Are Removing Books from Their Libraries
Harlow pointed me to the Web site of a local group called Community Patriots Manatee. The site features a call to action under the heading “Woke Buster’s Wanted.” The call reads, in part, “Whether your a Tax Payer, Parent, Grandparent, or Community Member, the society that is trying to be created by this deranged wokeness is nothing more than Mental Abuse for Children which WILL ultimately lead into Physical Abuse!” It informs prospective Woke Busters, “We may be in the process of removing books, reviewing curriculum, and making our case with the administrators and school board but this is only the tip of the iceberg. We have to STAY involved and vigilant!” Harlow believes that members of the group may have pressured the school to remove its books. (The group did not respond to an e-mail requesting comment.)
“They seem to be opposed to books that represent all kids,” Harlow said, referring to conservative government officials and advocacy groups in the state. She noted that two of the books that had been challenged or pulled from high-school libraries in previous purges—according to a 2022 pen America report, Florida has the second-highest number of book bans in the U.S., trailing only Texas—were “The 57 Bus,” a nonfiction Y.A. book about an agender teen-ager whose skirt gets set on fire by another teen, and “The Hate U Give,” the popular fictional story about the aftermath of the shooting of a young Black man by a white police officer. “The books they’ve pulled make their political agenda so clear,” Harlow said. “Excuse me, but it’s total bullshit.”
Harlow put her daughter Emma on the phone. “I’m scared they’re going to take my one history book away,” Emma said. “Our teacher has recently been teaching things that were supposed to come later in the year, closer to the A.P. exam, like slavery and, like, Native Americans.” She went on, “It felt like she’s rushing it towards us, like she’s scared it’s going to be taken away and she wants us to learn about it before they do. It’s, like, if these things don’t get taught, then we end up forgetting.” She added, “It’s kind of scary to think about.”
A spokesperson for the Manatee County Schools sent me a statement: “In regards to books in school media centers or classrooms, the School District of Manatee County is abiding by all applicable laws and statutes of the state of Florida, and adhering to the guidance of the Florida Department of Education.” The district communications officials in Duval County directed me to a January 23rd statement, which notes that the Florida D.O.E. “has trained all Florida schools districts to ‘err on the side of caution’ in determining if a book is developmentally appropriate for student use” and that Duval schools are working “to ensure compliance with all recent legislation regarding books and materials available to children through school media centers and classroom libraries.”
Here are some God Loving, Patriot Fighting, words of Unity and Love from emails we received from our WokeBuster Articles!!
I read in the New York Times today how organizations like yours are pushing school districts to remove books from public schools.
Thankfully, don’t live in Florida, I am so glad that my kids were not raised there. It is a bastion of ignorance and reactionary thinking. From your governor, on down, people in Florida seem to be determined Not to teach their children the critical skills they need to evaluate what they read in the news and what they learn in books.
Good luck to you raising your kids. I really feel sorry for kids who are victimized by parents such as you, who are determined to infuse them with stupidity and ignorance . How can they learn from life if they don’t have an opportunity to be exposed to different viewpoints, and develop their own opinions based on their internal values?
By force feeding them highly curated propaganda, you are ensuring that the next generation of children in Florida are close-minded and opinionated, yet unaware of the real facts of our world. Kind of like the kids that were raised in North Korea and East Germany.
I feel very fortunate to live in Maine, where we have an inclusive society and values that encourage exploring alternate ideas and philosophies. Without that freedom, we might as well be living in an authoritative, reactionary state, run by a moron, like… I don’t know…oh yeah, Trump.
When Hillary called you deplorables, you took offense, but I and millions of other Americans agree with Hillary, and your banning books in classrooms only proves my point. You truly are deplorable.
Sincerely,
Andrew Mazer,
Yarmouth, Maine

fucking backwards ass who are too stupid to recognize your own ignorance.
CF York
Your white supremacy group of fascists is disgusting like your leaders. I hope you and your Florida government get the shift suit out of you by every parent in your district. I believe the best thing for Florida and Texas to do is succeed from the United States and start your own fascist country. You make me in every other American sick you are cowards who tried to cover up the truth of what happened in American history.
Noneya Business
The kids will rebel against your bullshit. You’re nothing more than a pack of Nazis.
Juanita Thomas
Maybe do the thinking world a favor and clime into a very deep hole, you sad collection of nitwits.

First off, God bless America.
Second: I served my country in two foreign conflicts (Afghanistan and Iraq), defending your right to read whatever book you’d like to read, whenever you’d like to read it.
Third: You know who bans books, right? Communists. Nazis. Nobody you’re supposed to be supporting as Americans. As Americans, as Christians, as human beings: you should all be fucking embarrassed with yourselves.
Third: how fucking hilarious that you retards are attempting to police American education and — well, look at your main page.
“WOKE BUSTER’S”
You are an embarrassment to our country; you seek to CONSTRICT freedom, which is about the most un-American thing anyone can do. You hate other Americans for living their lives how they want to live them — and it bothers you so much that you want to stomp on their freedoms. You sick fucks fantasize about murdering them. I know you do. You’re very public about it these days. How very Christian of you.
You might believe that you are doing God’s work. I can’t speak for God. Neither can you. But what I can tell you is this: most Americans think you’re clowns; our founding fathers would consider you traitors; and anyone who has read a history book in the past twenty years (I guarantee that includes none of you) would consider you Marxist-Leninists or Nazis, or a twisted combination of the two.
Go fuck yourselves.
— A patriot
Freedom of thought? Constitution loving? But you support, promote and take actions to ban books? Everyone associated with the organization should be ashamed of who they have become, Of allowing yourselves to be led so far away From our nation’s values and founding principles. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!
